‘I’d be lying’ – Anthony Gordon drops another big Liverpool hint after transfer talks

Anthony Gordon admitted he has “more motivation” when facing the team he supported growing up.

The Newcastle United winger has been linked with a summer move to Liverpool and is believed to have grown up supporting the Reds despite his recent years representing Everton.

Gordon began his career with the Reds but was released by the club aged 11 and joined city rivals Everton. He left the Blues last January in a £40m deal to sign for Newcastle.

A recent report in The Daily Star indicated that Liverpool are interested in making a move for the England international this summer, suggesting that it would take “a bid of close to £100m to seriously test Newcastle’s resolve “.

Although he is yet to go on the record to confirm his love for Liverpool, the 23-year-old has seemingly made an attempt to prove a point when facing the Reds.

Asked by Sky Sports how he approaches matches against his childhood favorite, the winger said: “It’s the same as any other match. It doesn’t matter to me who I’m playing, my preparation is always the same. It’s always at the best possible level , I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little more motivation to show up and do well.”

Gordon did little to warm up to the Liverpool fans on his first trip to Anfield in April 2022 after receiving a yellow card for diving in the first half and subsequently going to ground inside the penalty area after minimal contact from at Joel Matip. Gordon took to X (formerly Twitter) after the game to express his disbelief at the decision.

But endearing himself to Reds supporters in more recent times, he named Steven Gerrard as his favorite player growing up and listed Mohamed Salah as an inspiration for his game.

Recently, taking it a step further, the England international was asked to describe the best atmosphere he has witnessed on a football pitch and told Channel 4: “Aside from St James’ Park, it’s by far Anfield. I think I’m from the city, I grew up watching her play You’ll Never Walk Alone, she’s top notch.
