Arctic air is set to hit Britain, bringing plummeting temperatures and thunder

People are being warned to brace for heavy downpours across Britain amid a cold and wet start to the summer. The weather is set to remain unsettled for the rest of this week, according to the Met Office.

Cold air drawn in from the Arctic by northerly winds will keep temperatures below average in the coming days. Tuesday and Wednesday will see mainly dry conditions in the west, but spells of rain are expected in eastern parts of the UK, Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “There will be more persistent rain across much of the country on Thursday.” Looking ahead, he predicts a “more unstable weather regime” for Thursday, Friday and into the weekend with “lightning showers”

20-40 mm of rain is expected. While most parts of the UK will experience temperatures in the mid-teens during the week, Mr Dixon warned: “It won’t feel particularly warm with the rain we’ve had.”
