‘Rape shaming’ councilor Slator is welcomed back by Tories – Inside Croydon

The Nasty Party is alive and well and handing out election leaflets on a nearby street.

conservative councilor: Shaun Slater

Inside Croydon last year reported the case of misogynistic Bromley councilor Shaun Slator, who was suspended from the Conservative Party for his “despicable” and “dangerous and stupid” rape-shaming comments.

Slator, a councilor for the St Mary Cray ward, posted comments on Twitter in early 2023 suggesting that a rape victim in a park was likely to be a sex worker. Under a link to an online news story reporting a rape in Plumstead, he wrote: “More likely a punter who didn’t pay.”

He later deleted the post and deactivated his social media account.

Slator was chairman of the Bromley and Chislehurst Conservative Association at the time.

After condemning the opposition parties in Bromley Council and Jess Phillips, Labour’s domestic violence spokesman, Slator issued an apology-not-sorry before spending the next year sulking on the benches of back, further extending the councilor allowance as “independent”.

And all the while Slator was allowed to continue his job at Westminster as parliamentary assistant to Jackie Doyle-Price, the Tory MP for Thurrock and former minister under Thick Lizzie Truss.

According to a Conservative spokesman, “Mr Slator has been readmitted to the Conservative Party after a sincere apology for his actions, as well as training and outreach with community groups.”

“Mobilization”. Hmmm.

Slator moved to hide details of his day job under declarations of interest on the Bromley website under section 32(2) of the Locality Act. It states that work details can be withheld from the public if the councilor or the council’s monitoring officer believes that disclosure “could lead to the member being subjected to violence or intimidation”. Hmmm.

As far as the Bromley Tories are concerned, all seems to be forgiven: Slator is now listed as vice-chairman, executive, PDS resource and contracts committee on Bromley Council.

While he has bounced back among the Bromley Tories – the same people who have been warned by the Metropolitan Police not to deliver election leaflets that appear to show a Met endorsement of their candidates – Slator’s employment position is a little more precarious elsewhere .

Charming pair: Jackie Doyle-Price and former Thurrock council leader Mark “Laughing Boy” Coxshall

After handing in his Palace of Westminster pass after dissolution last month, Slator may soon find himself officially unemployed.

Doyle-Price could lose her seat in the general election. In this case, staff in her parliamentary office will also receive their P45s.

Such an outcome would be a bit of a double whammy for the Doyle-Price household, as for the past 14 years she has also managed to get her partner, Mark Coxshall, onto the Westminster gravy train by working in her office with significant public expenses. . So he might as well be looking for a new job.

Coxshall describes himself as “An experienced Chief of Staff with a demonstrated history of working in the political organization industry. Knowledge in public affairs, political communication, elections, political science and governance.

“Strong administrative professional.”

This description seems unrecognizable from Mark Coxshall, who was a Conservative councilor in Thurrock, and for a time was even the leader of the Conservative group that controlled the council which was wrecked with financial problems even bigger than Croydon.

But hey…give it a few months, because consultancies will definitely be knocking on their door.
