Huddersfield BID’s Get Your Geek On comic con brings thousands to the town

Get Your Geek On returned to Huddersfield for its second year and geek chic took over the town center on Saturday, with thousands of comic fans descending on the town.

Star names Will Mellor and James Cosmo are joined by Georges Berthonneau of Married at First Sight fame, 90s Gladiator stars Scorpio and Cobra and The Punisher’s Billy Mansell.

Huddersfield BID’s take on the comics was a roaring success for the town, with dozens of self-proclaimed geeks flooding the town to meet the stars. Activities in town included ax throwing, Jedi training and a live dinosaur show.

Costumed pop culture fans danced their way through the streets for the children’s costume and cosplay parade, with everyone from Batman to Dennis the Menace enjoying the sun.

Get Your Geek On was a free event which was funded by Huddersfield BID following the success of last year’s inaugural event.

Married at First Sight, Georges – a self-confessed geek – showed off his gaming skills as he took on all comers. The day culminated in a competition to crown the best costume of Get Your Geek On 2024.

Huddersfield BID Manager Sam Sharp said: “I am so proud that Huddersfield BID has once again put on an amazing event in the heart of the city. We aim to highlight our amazing city not just in Yorkshire but across the UK.

“Huddersfield is open for business and we are a growing, changing town and a great place to visit.

“Many thanks to the BID team, volunteers, media guests and especially Lindsey Jordan and the Contract Entertainment team.”

Traders in the city reported an increase in receipts. The Imperial Arcade was packed and Ant Gotts of Handmade in Huddersfield reported his best Saturday of the year so far.

Pop culture store Diversions in the arcade also had a good day, with owner Gareth Hughes posting: “Thanks to Sam Sharp and the BID team. You have officially played a blinder!”
