A Batley man has been jailed for 21 years for rape as part of a huge West Yorkshire sex exploitation investigation.

Sajad Hussain, 40, was jailed at Leeds Crown Court on Monday June 10 as part of a police operation investigating recent sexual abuse in North Kirklees. Dubbed Operation Tourway, the investigation has been ongoing for several years and looks into the sexual abuse and trafficking of eight female victims in the area between 1999 and 2012.

Hussain has now been convicted of raping and falsely imprisoning a 20-year-old woman between 2010 and 2011. He has also been convicted of trafficking and aiding and abetting the rape of an 18-year-old victim between 2008 and 2009. .

This marks the 25th man to be convicted under Operation Tourway. A total of 367 cumulative years in prison were handed down by the courts to the men convicted in the operation.

DCI Oliver Coates, from Kirklees District Police, said: “Every sentence that comes under Operation Tourway marks another victory for the victims in this case and sees them take another step to ensure justice is brought against all these men for their horrific crimes which they committed.

“Sajad Hussain committed extremely serious sex offenses and helped others to do so, which speaks volumes for his attitude towards his victims whom he treated with contempt and contempt.

“The significant sentence he was given reflects the depth of his offending and we hope it has brought some comfort to his victims. He forced them both to relive their suffering by attempting a trial, but they can take satisfaction that a jury of their peers saw through his lies and denials and convicted him for what he is.”

He added: “We continue to urge any victims of sexual assault who may not have reported what happened to them to contact us. All reports are thoroughly investigated by specialist officers who can also refer victims to any support they may need.

“As this case and others heard in the Tourway inquiry demonstrate, we will always investigate, no matter how long ago the crime took place.”
