Leeds Rhinos confirm plans for a ‘permanent tribute’ to honor Rob Burrow

Leeds Rhinos have announced plans for a long-term tribute to rugby league legend Rob Burrow, a week after his death.

Shirts and other items have been left at Headingley Stadium since the sad news, while those left at Wembley Stadium on the day of the Challenge Cup Final have also been taken to Rhinos Stadium.

However, the club have now revealed their plans for a longer-term tribute.

Starting Monday this week, staff began storing the items that were left as tributes.

The reason for this, according to the club, is: “This is to ensure they are not damaged by the weather and the site remains a fitting tribute to Rob.

“Each will be photographed and put into a book, copies of which will go to the family, one to the stadium and one to be housed in the new Rob Burrow Center for MND.”

They also confirmed that they would work out with Rob’s family how the shirts could be used as a permanent tribute at the stadium.

The Rhinos have also confirmed that flower notes will be photographed for the book, while non-fresh flowers will be composted, with the compost added to the club’s Memorial Garden at the stadium.

The photos can also be viewed through a gallery on the club’s website.

People can still visit the stadium for the next two weeks, with the South Stand open from 8am to 8pm each day for people to lay flowers around the base of the John Holmes statue.

To ensure that all messages are captured permanently, they request that no more articles of clothing be taken there.

Leeds Rhinos have already announced plans that their next home game against Leigh Leopards, which takes place on Global MND Awareness Day, will be a celebration of Rob’s life.

A special shirt designed by Cath Muir, who was diagnosed with MND in 2014, will be worn for that game.

£10 from the sale of each shirt will be donated to Leeds Hospitals charity appeal to build the Rob Burrow Center for MND.

They also said: “The club is coordinating with the Burrow family regarding the details of Rob’s funeral, which will take place in early July.

“This will be a private event for family and friends, however there will be a chance for members of the public to pay their respects to Rob on his final journey, details of which will be published nearer the time.

“The club is also working with Leeds City Council on a larger civic event following Rob’s funeral, which will be streamed for those who wish to watch.

“Details in this regard will be announced in due course.
