Manchester United youngster completes swift transfer after rejecting contract

Omari Forson has joined Monza after rejecting a new contract at Manchester United.

The 19-year-old, who made his first-team debut as a substitute in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Wigan in January, has made seven senior appearances in 2023/24. He made his first Premier League start against Fulham and was a regular in the team in the second half of the campaign.

With his contract set to expire at the end of June, Forson has been named on United’s retained list for next season and offered a new deal. The Manchester Evening News reported on Tuesday morning that the teenager had rejected those new terms and Serie A side Monza are now announcing the signing of Forson, who has signed a contract until 2028.

Although he is set to join on a free transfer, United will receive due compensation from Monza. The destination choice was a surprise, but Forson should see regular playing time next season. Monza finished 12th in Serie A, although they might have been had they not ended the season without a win in nine games.

Forson moved to United from Tottenham in 2019 and progressed through the youth system before being integrated into the first team. He appeared on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States last summer but had to wait six months before receiving his first senior appearance.

His cameo against Arsenal last month proved to be his final in a United shirt. Forson is not the only player to leave United this summer, with Raphael Varane, Brandon Williams and Anthony Martial all confirmed to leave at the end of the month. There could be more to come in the summer transfer window.
