Man charged with rape after woman attacked on Dewsbury Street

A man has been charged with rape after a woman was attacked on the street in Dewsbury.

Amanat Ali Tariq, 42, of Wellington Road East, Dewsbury, will appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court tomorrow charged with rape, Article 18 assault, two counts of attempted rape and two counts of fraud and theft .



The offenses relate to an attack on a woman in the early hours of June 9. Mr Tariq was arrested by West Yorkshire Police and charged with the offences.

The victim is currently being supported by specially trained officers and Mr Tariq remains in police custody. In a statement, a spokesman for the force said: “A man is due to appear before magistrates after being charged in connection with a serious sexual offense in Dewsbury.

“Amanat Ali Tariq of Wellington Road East, Dewsbury, will appear before the morning sitting of Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, June 12, charged with rape and other offences. These include two counts of attempted rape, section 18 assault, two counts of fraud. and theft.

“The 42-year-old man has been remanded to appear in court after being arrested and charged in connection with the serious sexual assault of a woman in the early hours of Sunday 9 June.

“The victim continues to be supported by specially trained officers and inquiries into the incident remain ongoing by the Homicide and Major Investigation Squad.”
