A woman who died after being hit by a vehicle on a busy road in Bristol was on her way to a Take That concert at the city’s Ashton Gate Stadium. The woman, who has not yet been named by police, was taken to hospital on Sunday June 9 but died from her injuries.

She was struck by a vehicle driving along the A370 Brunel Way, near Ashton Gate, at around 5.30pm, just as crowds were arriving in large numbers at the stadium for Take That’s second concert of the weekend. Ashton Gate Stadium said their thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends.

In a statement, the stadium said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this tragic time. We understand he was on his way to attend the Take That concert here at the stadium.”

Police appealed for witnesses to the collision to get in touch. The police arrested a 60-year-old woman on the spot, being suspected of driving while impaired by drugs. She was later released under investigation pending further inquiries.

The road was closed northbound for around three-and-a-half hours, leading to long queues back on the Long Ashton bypass as motorists heading into the city were blocked from crossing the Avon Bridge from Ashton Gate to Hotwells and have were redirected to Coronation Road.

A police spokesman said: “We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Bristol on Sunday evening. Officers were called at around 5.30pm to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on the A370 Brunel Way.

“The pedestrian was taken to hospital. Despite the best efforts of emergency services personnel, she died from her injuries. Her next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. They will be supported by a specially trained family liaison officer.
