Senior Solicitor (Governance and Regulation) job at Sheffield City Council

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Legal Services team at Sheffield City Council as a Senior Governance and Regulatory Solicitor. The team operates in a fast-paced environment dealing with a diverse and demanding range of legal practice areas. These areas include governance, education, housing, licensing and general prosecutions.

Applications are welcome from people who are enthusiastic, flexible and enjoy working in a team. We are looking for candidates who are motivated to apply their expertise and practical experience in providing solution-focused legal advice to the Council on governance matters.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing authoritative advice to officers and Board members, ensuring that decisions and actions are legal. They will handle their own cases, which will include complex and interesting areas of law. This includes providing advice on committee and Council reports and other constitutional matters. In addition, the successful candidate will have day-to-day management of a team of dedicated lawyers and paralegals, making a positive contribution to our communities.

Although public sector experience would be beneficial, it is not essential if the candidate can demonstrate relevant expertise in local government law and practice.

This role is based in Sheffield but we actively support flexible working arrangements and the city is centrally located with excellent transport links and we consider the wellbeing of our employees in the way we design and deliver our legal services. You can expect the ability to work flexibly, including hybrid working, to be a feature of working for Sheffield City Council.

This is a politically restricted post under the terms of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks a year and we offer generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussing a range of flexible working opportunities that benefit you and the Council, including reduced hours contracts, part-time work or as a shared workplace.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the final grade. If you provide proof of pay that your base pay is higher than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the minimum advantage point within the grade.
