Former bus conductor turns 100 – South London News

By Kelsey McCabe

A former bus driver celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends last week.

Lillian Stromdale, resident of Mary Holben House in Thrale Road, Streathamsaid: “I don’t feel 100, like I’m cheating!

“I can’t say I’m 20, but I feel, well, normal.

“It’s a bit of a surprise, but I’m delighted to have reached 100.”

Mrs Stromdale, born in London’s East End in 1924, worked in factories for most of her working life, although she also had a spell as a bus conductor in the 1950s and said she enjoyed the job.

Miss Stromdale’s loved ones described her as tenacious and as lively at 100 as she was as a teenager during the Second World War, when she once refused to leave a cinema in during an air raid siren because she wanted to see the end of her movie.

Kim Wells, housing officer at Southern Housing, said: “She is a wonderful lady.

“I still remember when he moved, he had a hip replacement, but within days he was on his feet. I think that sums up what kind of lady she is.”

Today, Ms Stromdale says she enjoys a pint, dancing and talking to her neighbours.

“My secret? To live a healthy life, try not to worry and surround yourself with good friends,” Ms Stromdale said.

“There’s no point in worrying about something if you can’t do anything about it. Be kind and treat others as you would like to be treated.”
