Wiltshire Police is adopting a zero tolerance policy on abuse during the upcoming Euro football tournament.

The competition, which is being held in Germany, kicks off on Friday (June 14) with England among the favourites.

DCI Lucy Thorne said reports of domestic abuse increase during major tournaments but football is not the cause.

“It just creates opportunities for people to be a little bit more emotional and have a little bit of increased alcohol consumption,” she said.

They are appealing to the public to support people we think may be experiencing abuse by being more vigilant about them over the next few weeks.

She added: “For the people themselves who may be experiencing abuse, please know that we will be there to support you.”

DCI Thorne said if contacting the police was a step too far, there were other partner agencies on the police site who could help.
