Five reasons why Manchester United made the right decision by keeping Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have finally made a decision regarding Erik ten Hag and that decision is to keep the Dutchman in charge next season.

Ineos took their sweet time making their big decision on Erik ten Hag, almost three weeks out from their FA Cup triumph, which ultimately was probably a deciding factor in the decision.

The decision ultimately means that Manchester United will continue with Ten Hag as manager, a decision that has delighted the fan base as indicated by reactions on social media.

It’s a decision that is welcome as it means Manchester United can finally turn their attention to the transfer window and start putting a plan in place for next season.

Although annoying, it is understandable why Ineos would take so long, but now that the decision has been made, we must hope it is the right one. Here are five reasons why we think it is.

Erik ten Hag won two trophies in two seasons

Probably the most obvious of all the reasons, he has a record of 100% winning silverware in a season since joining the club, which is remarkable in itself considering where the club was when he took over.

While he will be the first to admit that the league season has been bad, to still win a trophy in what is the club’s worst season in recent memory is a good sign.

It also makes us confident that we’ll see more silverware next season, something we could get used to again.

Manchester United’s injury crisis would have hampered any team

While eighth place is awful, there is the clear impact of injuries on the team to point to as a reason and why next season should be much better.

For the way Ten Hag wanted to play football, Lisandro Martinez is arguably the most important player in the squad and has missed most of the season, while Luke Shaw has endured an equally torrid season .

The replacements for these players simply weren’t able to do what the first-choice players were capable of and so it’s no surprise that United suffered. Hopefully this summer, with fewer injuries and strong recruitment, we will see a huge resurgence.

Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo

For all the negatives that could be leveled against the Ten Hag, one thing that is undeniable is his impact on United’s two burgeoning stars, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

The pair of 19-year-olds rose to fame during Ten Hag’s time and as a result both clearly have an abundance of respect and love for their manager, something a new manager cannot replicate.

There is nothing better than Carrington graduates coming in and becoming the club’s star players, and under the Ten Hag, with his Ajax roots, there is a real chance we could see it become an annual thing.

That reason alone is worth giving Ten Hag another year with these two truly special players who love their football under the manager.

United needed to end the two-season managerial cycle

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, United have gone through four full-time managers, with Ten Hag the fifth. They are all big names in the world of football and bring different experiences and tactical preferences.

They all had one thing in common, they suffered under the Glazer rule, which inevitably always led to their sacking and the club having to start from scratch.

So keeping Ten Hag is a smart decision because it’s not a coincidence and all other managers have failed and now with a strong football structure, hopefully Ten Hag will thrive as we desperately hope they will.

The alternatives just weren’t worth firing Ten Hag

The latter is slightly less optimistic, but is potentially the main reason why Ten Hag will be in the Manchester United dugout come August and that the options to replace him simply aren’t good enough.

For Ineos, the choices ranged from failed Chelsea managers to managers who endured horrendous 2024s with Brighton or even managers who have never managed a top 10 team.

No available option was better than Ten Hag and so it is likely that he stays.
