Fire declared after crews descend on Sheffield city centre

The fire service issued a statement after several fire crews were seen descending on Sheffield city center on Monday (June 10).

A video shared online by imjustsheff showed fire crews rushing to the Sainsbury’s Local store on the High Street. In the clip, a fire truck could be seen pulling up at the scene, with two other vehicles parked nearby.

Two firefighters could be seen standing guard outside the door, while several others rushed out of their vehicles and into the building.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have since confirmed they were called to the store at 11.41am on Monday 10 June to investigate a ‘burning smell’. It was later confirmed to be from a faulty lighting element in a refrigeration unit.

No firefighting action was required and crews left the scene at 12.10pm. A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Crews were called at 11.41am on Monday 10 June to a retail store on the High Street in Sheffield city centre.

“Upon arrival, crews from Central Station investigated a burning smell which was found to be coming from a faulty lighting element within a refrigeration unit. No firefighting action was required and crews left the scene at 12.10pm.”
