The M1 southbound has been closed near Leeds as a late-night crash sees fuel spill on the motorway

Motorists were asked to avoid the M1 southbound late yesterday evening into this morning after a crash on the motorway. The crash, which involved a lorry and a car, caused a fuel spill on the motorway – leaving motorists stranded late into the night.

Traffic was diverted on the outbound and inbound roads, with travelers warned of around 1.5 miles of congestion. National Highways: Yorkshire first reported the incident at 10.20pm on Tuesday June 11, saying emergency services and traffic officers were at the scene.




Posting on X, they wrote: ‘Traffic is stopped on the #M1 southbound at J41 #Wakefield #Tingley following a single vehicle collision. Emergency services and traffic officers are at the scene. There is about 2.5 miles of congestion on approach.”

At 10.44pm they added: ‘The M1 southbound is closed at J41 #Wakefield #Tingley following a single vehicle collision and a fuel spill on the carriageway. Traffic is being diverted via the exit and entrance roads. There is about 1 mile. agglomeration on approach. Please allow additional travel time.”

The latest update, which was posted at 11.20pm, reported that the southbound freeway remained closed. Highways England wrote: β€œThe M1 south remains closed at J41 #Wakefield #Tingley following an earlier collision between a lorry and a car. Recovery and cleanup teams are on site. Traffic is being diverted on the exit and entrance roads.”
