A major refurbishment of one of Torpoint Ferries’ ferries is now complete – and it will return home before returning to service.

Tamar II was in Falmouth where she underwent a five-year refit.

Works included:

A mandatory dry dock to allow an examination of the underwater body to ensure that the condition of the material is sufficient to safely last another five years. This is a legal requirement and satisfactory completion is required to enable a chain ferry certificate to be issued by the regulator, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Replacement of systems and equipment that are becoming obsolete or have reached the end of their life, including couplings and chain bearings, along with electronic drive motor components.

repaint the ship both above and below the waterline.

reconditioning of the passenger lounge and upper deck seating area.

Once safely back at Torpoint after the 44 nautical mile sea journey, the towing gear will be removed and staff at Tamar Crossings and A.&P Falmouth will begin preparing the vessel for service.

This will include reconnecting the ferry to the chains, restoring the rescue and firefighting equipment and seats, and carrying out engineering tests of the upgraded chain drive system.

Once this work has been completed, the ferry must be officially inspected and cleared to operate from the MCA before it can return to service.

Each of the three ferries undergoes a complete overhaul every five years. PLYM’s refit was completed in June 2023, with LYNHER’s refit due in April 2025.

“These refurbishments are essential to maximize the life of the ferry and ensure we continue to provide a safe and reliable service.” David List said. “During two ferry operations, ferry staff have worked hard to minimize service disruptions and any breakdowns have been dealt with as quickly as possible.

“I would like to thank the drivers and passengers for their patience during this time.”
