Brent Taylor Asks Tennessee AG to Investigate DOJ Deal of DA – Memphis Local, Sports, Business & Food News

State Sen. Brent Taylor is asking the Tennessee attorney general’s office to investigate a recent agreement between the U.S. Department of Justice and the Shelby County District Attorney’s office to stop local enforcement of the state’s aggravated prostitution law.

And in response, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said his office still prosecutes prostitution, just not under the aggravated prostitution law, which comes with increased penalties and applies to those who engage in sex work knowing that have HIV.

Taylor wrote a letter to Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti on Monday, June 10, asking whether the settlement with the DOJ is legal and whether he would consider appointing an outside prosecutor to enforce the law in light of the settlement.
