Objection to late West Street bar license bid

A man who lives near a city center bar claimed he is “sleep deprived” because of the venue’s noise levels.

Bar One Four One on West Street has applied to Sheffield City Council for permission to open until 4am every weekday.

The bid to extend the license will be considered by a council sub-committee on June 17, but South Yorkshire Police have agreed to support it as long as customers are not admitted after 3am.

One resident whose objections will be heard at the meeting said: “There is already noise disruption from One Four One every Friday and Saturday night until the current closing time which is 3am.

“Music keeps us awake and we suffer weekly from the physical and psychological effects of sleep deprivation. Any further extension of their opening hours would add to the already significant problems we face with noise disruption.”

The resident also stated: “We made two complaints directly to the bar and asked them to turn down the music and keep the outside door closed (it’s not open as it always is) and we were told to ‘go away’.

“We have made a formal complaint to planning and licensing but the noise issues at One Four One persist. I have been gathering evidence over the past 12 months and can submit this to the license if required.”

In accordance with Local Democracy Reporting Servicethe venue’s general manager claimed the noise created was not loud enough to cause problems.

In a statement, they said: “Unless you are outside the venue at the windows, the noise levels are not at a level where they would cause inconvenience.

“I myself live above the bar at 141 West Street and have an 18-year-old daughter who lives with me permanently and a six- and two-year-old who stops by on weekends. We have soundproofing throughout the building, so I fail to understand how he can identify from his apartment that One Four One is the problem.”

They added that the night-time economy provides jobs for Sheffield.

“Covid has hit the hospitality trade the hardest, with businesses collapsing and people losing their livelihoods. We as a venue do our best to minimize any anti-social behavior and nuisance and will continue to do so. “
