Leeds United defender shines in last night’s 4-0 national team thrashing after playing in unusual position

A host of Leeds United stars are currently in action for their countries and one starred in a 4-0 win for his Nation overnight, even playing a new role as an attacking midfielder.

Many of Leeds’ players are preparing for Euro 2024, with Rasmus Kristensen, Robin Koch, Liam Cooper and Max Wober all selected by their countries ahead of the tournament which starts in Germany on Friday.

Others are in action in the Americas with the Copa America and even 2026 World Cup qualifiers to come. Brenden Aaronson is set to return to Elland Road and face Brazil with the USA this week.

Another is left-back Junior Firpo, who has chosen to represent the Dominican Republic ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer. The former Barcelona man enjoyed a brilliant second half of the campaign.

Junior Firpo impresses in a new role as the Dominican Republic win 4-0

Firpo provided eight assists after being one of the players to return to the Leeds squad in January alongside the likes of Ilia Gruev, Willy Gnonto and Patrick Bamford after missing most of the first half.

An excellent run of form which also saw Firpo assist in the 4-0 play-off semi-final win over Norwich. Now Firpo’s future at Leeds is in doubt, with his contract at Elland Road set to expire in 2025.

But now Firpo will focus on representing the Dominican Republic and overnight, he helped his side beat the British Virgin Islands 4-0 in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier and even played a new role.

Firpo used as one of the two no.10s in the attacking 3-4-2-1 system

A formation used by Antonio Conte at Chelsea, the Dominican Republic tried to take home what was expected to be an easy win over the Virgin Islands, lining up in an attacking system on the night.

Firpo was used to the right of the two players behind the striker. Although he didn’t get his name on the scoresheet despite his country having 26 attempts on goal, Firpo made a late pass for the fourth.

The Dominican Republic went 3-0 up in the first half with Rafa Nunez scoring twice and a penalty from Donny Romero. Then in overtime, Firpo slid in a right-footed pass to Romero to make it 4-0.

After losing to Jamaica in their opening group match, Firpo’s nation sit third in a five-nation group that also includes Dominica and Guatemala. Next up for Firpo is the Paris Olympics this summer.
