Sheffield Wednesday in ‘advanced stages’ of shock deal to sign ‘outstanding’ player.

Sheffield Wednesday are now closing in on their first transfer deal of the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are just days away from the opening of the summer transfer window and have already been linked with a number of players.

The Owls are expected to complete a free transfer for goalkeeper Ben Hamer, while former Southampton defender Yan Valery has already agreed personal terms for a move back to England.

Now they appear to be closing in on another free agent, although this one will only have to make the three-mile trip from Bramall Lane.

Sheffield Wednesday to sign Sheff Utd ace

According to The Star journalist Alex Miller, Wednesday are in the “advanced stages” of bringing Max Lowe to the club.

He wrote on X: “EXC: Understand that Sheffield Wednesday are in the advanced stages of finalizing a deal to sign Sheffield United defender Max Lowe. Left back, 27, former England youth international.”

Max Lowe joined Sheffield United from Derby County in 2020 but managed just eight appearances in his first season in the Premier League.

The defender joined Nottingham Forest on loan for the 2021-22 campaign and earned five assists in 21 games as they were promoted to the top flight.

He then returned to the Championship with the Blades, where he claimed five assists in 26 games.

Their promotion saw him forced down the pecking order, making just four starts before it was confirmed he would be released when his contract expired at the end of the month.

Lowe also battled a host of injuries during his time at Bramall Lane and was never able to claw his way back into the starting line-up when available.

However, he was hailed as “outstanding” when fit for Wednesday’s bitter rivals.

Lowe could now be looking to restart his Championship career and is already in advanced talks with the Owls over a shock transfer.

The Star report claims a medical is likely to take place towards the end of the week before he joins the club to compete with Marvin Johnson on the left.

The 27-year-old has also played as a left midfielder, right back and centre-back during his career, so he could be very useful if Danny Rohl has struggled with injuries.

Max Lowe will be added to a very short list

There have been very few players who have made the jump from Sheffield United to Sheffield Wednesday, although when journalist Joe Crann turned to X to ask fans about potential moves, there were a few answers.

Sheffield-born Howard Wilkinson began his career at United before moving to Wednesday in 1962, although he did not make a senior appearance for the Blades.
