The search for Manchester United’s £75m defender is gathering pace

After an impressive campaign with Everton, defender Jarrad Branthwaite has attracted interest from Manchester United, with the hierarchy looking to complete a deal by the end of this month. Erik Ten Hag already has a left-footed centre-back in Lisandro Martinez, although his presence was sorely lacking throughout last season for Manchester United as he was sidelined for much of it due to multiple injuries. Branthwaite would be expected to join him in the immediate starting XI.

The fact that Branthwaite has played 35 games this season is undoubtedly a factor in United’s interest, as that longevity and consistency in Everton’s defense throughout the campaign is what Manchester United desperately need from their defence. Injuries have stopped United at almost every turn over the past year, and someone like Branthwaite would be an incredible addition.

In Jarrad Branthwaite, Manchester United will get another smooth operator on the ball, capable of playing a variety of passes, comfortable on two feet and can play out from the back like the Ten Hag desperately wants teams to do. With a pass rate of just over 80% last season at Everton at just 21, there’s only one way for him to go, and that’s up.

Frankly, not trying to get this deal done would be a big mistake for Manchester United. If they don’t move for Branthwaite, there are others lingering around the deal, with one team in particular not going to like Manchester United. The £75m price tag seems a bit high and United seem to value him more in the £40-45m range. Given Everton’s FFP fees, it seems highly unlikely that they will budge on the valuation of a prized asset like Jarrad Branthwaite.

Manchester United will no doubt have to raise any potential bid, otherwise this deal could fall into the hands of unwanted suitors and competitors for Erik Ten Hag and his men. I think that in the long term, a player of Branthwaite’s quality and age presents far more upside than downside, making this deal worthwhile. Finding that price sweet spot will be Manchester United’s biggest challenge.
