What Archie Gray and his family think about the prospect of leaving Leeds United this summer

Archie Gray is one of, if not the most wanted member of the Leeds United squad this summer.

Having been given his debut against Cardiff City on the opening day of last season, Gray is just one year into his professional career.

However, big clubs already like what they’ve seen with Bayern Munich, just one of several to take a look in recent months.

After Leeds’ failure to win promotion back to the Premier League, 49ers Enterprises have already admitted that some player sales will be needed this summer to balance the books.

Paraag Marathe was asked directly about Gray’s future in an interview earlier this month, but could not commit to either way if he stays, given the proximity of Leeds’ defeat at Wembley.

Ben Jacobs shares Gray’s stance on Leeds exit

Journalist Ben Jacobs spoke on the latest episode of the Just Joe Football Show on Tuesday night, where he tackled a number of topics at Elland Road ahead of the window opening this week.

Alongside Gray’s future was an update on Leeds’ reported interest in Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist, who is actually said to be ‘open’ to a loan move to the Whites this summer.

And while income will be vital to Leeds’ promotion chances next season, it is outflows that will occupy the early stages of the window.

With Gray a childhood Leeds supporter as well as his family history, his future certainly feels a lot different to anyone else in the squad, so Jacobs shared an update on his stance on a possible departure.

He said: “All the Grays are very much in their thinking and very happy to stay, even if it’s another season in the Championship. He came through the U21s and finally a breakthrough season doesn’t mean you have to skip it.

“I’m not sure many of the clubs linked to Gray can give him the game time needed for his development. Look at Liverpool who are very close to the Gray family and I know for a fact that the player, the players family and those around him respect the people at Liverpool who have been in touch, especially the head scout Barry Hunter…

“In the Gray family’s view, the best place for him is Leeds United and so it will take something quite special, or financially urgent from Leeds’ perspective, to change that.”

Gray’s value could double at Leeds in 12 months

LeedsUnited.News He recently spoke exclusively to transfer insider Graeme Bailey about Gray’s future at Leeds, which also had quite an interesting update.

He believes that if Gray stays at Leeds for another season, his value could double in the next 12 months if he helps the Whites to promotion.

With that in mind, Bailey suggested that clubs could try to take advantage of his situation this summer, but it won’t be easy.

He said: “If you’re Archie Gray, you only have to look at the likes of Adam Wharton, or more specifically Jude Bellingham. I think Archie Gray is a generational talent and we haven’t even seen half of his potential at Leeds.

“Like Bellingham, you can still be a fan of a championship club and then play for somebody big. I have seen it many times. He will always be a Leeds fan, but chances are he won’t spend much of his career there now.

“I think Leeds will be worried going into the summer, if one of these big clubs decides to make a run for him from the continent it will be difficult to keep him. Gray will watch Wharton play for England last night six months after leaving Blackburn.

“In terms of talent, Gray is up there with Wharton, and I’m not saying he’s the next Bellingham, but he’s that good. I think Leeds would do very well to keep him this summer and it depends on who wants him.

“He’s very high on a lot of teams’ lists and if you want Gray you’d better get him now after Leeds failed to get promotion. This summer would be the best to do it, don’t let him be part of Leeds’ Championship winning team with him as their star player. It might cost you twice as much.”
