Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist is open to joining Leeds United on loan this summer, having been linked with the youngster recently.

Leeds’ transfer business has yet to kick off after missing out on promotion at the end of May, which isn’t really a shock considering it’s not even mid-June.

However, it hasn’t stopped links surfacing for a number of positions, including in defense which has lost a few loanees.

Chelsea’s Alfie Gilchrist on Leeds’ radar for loan deal

Journalist Ben Jacobs recently claimed that Leeds are interested in taking Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist on loan this summer.

The 20-year-old has broken into the first team at Stamford Bridge this season and has attracted the attention of Championship sides in the process.

Blackburn Rovers and Preston are also named in Jacobs’ report, which claims the Whites are keen on a season-long deal.

Happy to have Aaronson back?

The journalist shares an update on Gilchrist’s position on the Leeds transfer

Jacobs has now offered further insight into the matter, speaking on the Just Joe Football Show about the prospect of Gilchrist heading out on loan to the EFL and Leeds in particular.

He had this to say about when Chelsea could be willing to let the defender leave to join Leeds or another club on loan for 24/25:

“The feeling is that he will be loaned to a Championship club, that is the plan and the intention of the player. It is highly unlikely that in the position he plays Chelsea will think otherwise, the only question mark is when he is in the window as sometimes clubs like Chelsea want to take the player in pre-season.

“I’m sure in the coming weeks he will go to a Championship club, but it could be more like the end of July or the beginning of August because of what I said. You have Leeds, Preston and Blackburn as clubs that have taken a formative approach.

“To all intents and purposes, Gilchrist would be open to a move from Leeds. He has a lot of respect, Chelsea and Leeds have a big rivalry, but he would go there anyway. He would be very willing to help Leeds fight for promotion.”

Gilchrist would be great for Leeds’ depth next season

Given that we lost Joe Rodon and Connor Roberts after their loans ended, it makes a lot of sense for someone like Gilchrist to come in.

Not only could he do the job at right-back for us, but he is also capable of playing at centre-back alongside Pascal Struijk.

He’s a great signing for depth as he covers two positions at once, even if he hasn’t shown enough technically to prove he should be our starting right back.
