Danny Rohl’s cunning transfer plan at Sheffield Wednesday is now clear

Danny Rohl and his summer transfer plan at Sheffield Wednesday is becoming increasingly clear.

Sheffield Wednesday enter a crucial summer transfer window, with the window officially opening for business on June 14.

The Owls have already seen the likes of Lee Gregory and Reece James move on to new clubs, with Will Vaulks the most recent; Vaulks has signed for Oxford United on a permanent deal.

Others such as Di’Shon Bernard could follow, so for Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday, it promises to be a busy but very interesting summer transfer window.

An already thin first team squad will need goals and then some. Not only that, but Sheffield Wednesday are in desperate need of an injection of youth into the side.

The Owls boasted the oldest average first-team squad in the last Championship list at 27.3 years, so Rohl will be eager to add some younger legs to the ranks this summer.

But it seems Rohl has a more specific plan, and it’s one that’s coming to fruition quickly.

Sheffield Wednesday are tracking transfer bids for Yan Valery and Max Lowe

Sheffield Wednesday are heavily linked with offers for full-backs Yan Valery and Max Lowe; Valery right back and Lowe left back.

The full-back department is one of many depleted at Sheffield Wednesday, so both arriving players will give Rohl some much-needed depth in those areas for next season.

Both are more generic full backs. Rohl’s current options in Marvin Johnson and Pol Valentin are better suited as full-backs and so bringing in full-backs who function better in a back four gives Rohl some freedom and flexibility in terms of the shape he can play next season.

Rohl mainly donned a back-5 last season. He experimented with a back-four, but not often to his success, largely because he lacked the players to play a back-four, with Johnson particularly exposed when playing at left-back.

Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer plans under Danny Rohl

Rohl seems to be preparing his team to play in different forms next season; expect him to favor the 5-2-2-1 that served him and his players well last season, but expect him to want the players to change that.

That 5-2-2-1 formation was very fluid and could often change to a two-front formation. But the back five rarely changed.

In games where the Owls wanted to be more attacking, Rohl could often turn into a back-four, and now having players like Lowe and Valery provide cover and more quality in different formations makes Sheffield Wednesday a more unpredictable outfit.

Deals for neither player are yet to be finalised, and a deal for Valery looks like it could become quite difficult for the Owls with other clubs interested.

But we do have a teaser of what could be coming this summer in S6. Other positions are in desperate need of additions; Central midfielders and forwards appear to be the key areas, with Rohl looking like he is close to overhauling his goalkeeping department with a return for James Beadle and a deal for Ben Hamer.

Overall, though, it’s been a promising start to the summer for Sheffield Wednesday, albeit with no new players over the line yet.
