Super League teams will be paid big money to play in Las Vegas

Super League clubs could be set to earn six-figure sums if they head to the US to play a match in 2025, according to reports Down Under.

The first professional rugby league matches in the States were played in the first round of the 2024 NRL season as more than 40,000 fans turned out for the historic doubleheader.

The Sydney Roosters, Brisbane Broncos, Manly Sea Eagles and South Sydney Rabbitohs took part.

The Australian Daily Telegraph reported that NRL sides participating in the second year of games in Las Vegas will receive huge sums of money if they take a game to Nevada.

They report that the main participants next year are Penrith Panthers, NZ Warriors, Cronulla Sharks and Canberra Raiders.

A document was sent to these clubs, as well as four others, suggesting that the home team (who would lose a match at their own stadium) would receive A$350,000 (about £180,000) while the away team would receive A$50,000 Australian dollars. dollars (around £26,000).

Clubs would also have eight days of accommodation in Las Vegas, fully funded by the NRL.

The report also says the NRL is also working on two Super League teams competing in a club game.

However, it is unclear which parties might participate and whether the negotiations have been successful so far.

However, the Sydney Morning Herald suggested that Warrington Wolves could be a party to take part, saying: “Sources with knowledge of the situation who are not authorized to speak have publicly confirmed that the Super League game will kick off at lunchtime in Vegas, which would mean it is broadcast in England at 9pm on Saturday night.

“The NRL noted that more than 1000 fans headed to the US from England to watch the inaugural round zero action with South Sydney, Manly, Sydney Roosters and Brisbane.

“One UK club that has a strong appeal is Warrington, due to their success this year (they were third in the Super League on Saturday night games), multi-millionaire music promoter owner Simon Moran and the fact that they are coached by former South Sydney. favorite son Sam Burgess.”

They went on to suggest that the potential for Super League involvement could have a significant impact on planning, saying: “Plans for a Super League game to be played for competition points before the NRL double-header have been discussed by Australian officials. and England.

“The NRL has delayed finalizing the four clubs to play in Vegas next year due to delicate negotiations involving Super League.”

This would mark a first for Super League as it would be the first game played in North America since the Toronto Wolfpack began playing home games at Headingley and pulled out of the season before being able to play in Toronto due to the COVID- 19.

It could mark a huge opportunity to expand into a new market for the league, especially now that IMG has taken over the commercial side of the game.

Clubs may also find it necessary to participate to avoid being left behind by the NRL as a brand.
