Wigan: Gang of machetes who sparked town center shop lockout arrested | UK news

Two knives were recovered following what police described as a “truly frightening incident”, with a suspect apprehended after being chased by officers who “put themselves into harm’s way without hesitation”.

Three men have been arrested after reports of a machete-wielding gang in a city center sparked panic and led to shops going into lockdown.

A suspect was chased by officers across Wigan before being apprehended with the help of the public at a bus stop on suspicion of being in possession of a bladed article.

Two other men believed to be linked to the incident on Thursday afternoon were arrested nearby on Frog Lane on suspicion of being in possession of an offensive weapon.

Two knives were recovered and the three suspects are in custody.

Inspector Sam Davies said: “This was a truly frightening incident for the public, with local shops taking the decision to close for their safety.

“Thankfully no members of the public were injured and I am pleased to say all our officers are safe.

“They put themselves in harm’s way without hesitation, and through their courageous actions, all individuals we believe were involved were quickly arrested.”

He added: “I would also like to thank a member of the public who tried to assist an officer in apprehending a suspect at Wigan bus station.
