British tourists flying to Mallorca, Barcelona and Greece on holiday ‘warned’

Tourists in Mallorca, Barcelona and Greece from the UK have been warned of a change in weather. A travel warning has been issued for British tourists heading abroad after chaos struck Palma in Majorca, with the airport flooded after a deluge of heavy and torrential rain.

Cities such as Barcelona are also expected to be hit this week. It comes as a yellow weather warning has been issued for Murcia, in south-east Spain, where 25 liters of rain is expected, according to the Spanish version of the Met Office.

In Greece, meanwhile, the European Union’s holiday hotspot is expecting a heat wave. Temperatures in Greece could soar to 41C as a blast of heat sweeps across the continent’s Mediterranean, weather experts have warned.

A spokesman for Palma Airport said: “Palma Airport has resumed operations following the storm. The first take-offs and landings have already started and diverted flights are expected to land at Palma Airport during the afternoon. The airport continues to work for normalization.

“The Airport Authority (Aena) advises passengers to check with their airline before traveling to the airport.” It added: “The airport has activated its flood emergency plan and is working as quickly as possible to restore normality to the airport.”

Despite the fact that Mallorca was hit, the heaviest rain was in Ibiza. Rain warnings in the holiday hotspot of the Balearic Islands were still in place until 9pm. Aemet has forecast more rain for Wednesday and there is a possibility of a few more on Thursday.

The floods brought operations to a standstill for hours, flights diverted and, most notably, a flooded car park which meant a non-stop parade of cars and tourists in the rain.
