The only ‘big’ reason why Will Vaulks left Sheffield Wednesday for Oxford United is now emerging

Joe Crann has now explained the “big” reason why Will Vaulks decided to leave Sheffield Wednesday this week.

After making 34 appearances last season, Will Vaulks was one of many senior players offered a new contract by Sheffield Wednesday.

However, rumors emerged that the midfielder could still be on his way out of the club, before it was confirmed yesterday that he had rejected a deal and joined Oxford United instead.

There has been a lot of disappointment and confusion surrounding Vaulks’ exit, however, The Star journalist Joe Crann has now explained that there is a fairly simple reason why he chose to leave.

Will Vaulks has been offered a three-year contract by Oxford United

Writing at X, he said: “Oxford United have offered Will Vaulks a three-year deal to leave #SWFC and I understand they simply showed more desire to have him on their books than they did on Wednesday. . It played an important role in his decision.”

According to The Star, Vaulks initially did not want to leave Hillsborough until he entered into talks with Oxford.

Des Buckingham’s side then offered the 30-year-old a three-year deal, while the Owls did not “match Oxford’s ambition” when it came to including him in their plans for the 2024/25 season.

Will Vaulks wanted a key position in midfield next season

It’s not clear what he gave Vaulks on Wednesday, but it seems pretty obvious that he may not have played as big a role as he did at the Kassam Stadium.

The only senior central midfielder left from Wednesday is Barry Bannan now, but they are likely to have massively improved their midfield this summer and Vaulks understandably wants to feel essential wherever he decides to go.

It leaves the Owls in a difficult position, but it seems they have been very proactive with their transfer business so far and have left supporters with nothing major to worry about in terms of their recruitment.
