Birmingham man killed in overnight shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A 30-year-old Birmingham man was killed Wednesday in an overnight shooting in the parking lot of a convenience store.

According to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade of the Birmingham Police Department, officers responded to a shots fired call around 12:23 a.m. in the 1400 block of Third Avenue W, which includes a commercial market.


Police found a man lying face down in the parking lot of the mall. He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced the man dead. BPD later identified the victim as Tadarius Omar Debodre Jones.

Wade said the preliminary investigation shows Jones and others were gathered in the parking lot. An unknown suspect approached Jones, shot him and fled the scene.

No one is in custody in connection with the shooting. Those with information about the case are urged to call BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
