Wigan Warriors coach Matt Peet tackles NRL links with a quick response

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has said he has “no interest” in reports linking him with the Parramatta Eels head coaching vacancy.

Peet was named Down Under as one of the candidates who would be considered ideal to succeed Brad Arthur.

In fact, NRL great Matty Johns went so far as to suggest: “A candidate from the left of centre. Peet has been rumored to be interested in the Eels position, even though he has extended his contract at Wigan.

“Peet has proven himself to be an elite trainer in a short period of time. He is in his third season at the helm of the Warriors and has already won a Challenge Cup, a Super League title and beaten Penrith in the World Club Challenge to win Coach of the Year.

“No wonder Wigan have offered him a seven-year extension, taking him until the end of 2030. Tactically astute and loved by his players, Peet will one day coach in the NRL.”

However, Peet has dismissed suggestions that he has any interest in the Eels job. Believing that his name will inevitably be raised with certain jobs due to the success the Warriors have enjoyed under his leadership, he denied that he would be interested in a move to the NRL.

“I think it will happen because the team is playing well,” he said. “But I’m not interested.”

Peet’s comments will come as a major relief to Warriors fans, who have enjoyed incredible success under his leadership. He has already won every possible domestic trophy – including the Challenge Cup twice – in just two-and-a-half seasons at the club.

And having recently signed a deal until the end of the 2030 campaign, it looks like he won’t be leaving the NRL anytime soon.
