Man Utd’s transfer war chest will give Liverpool an edge in the battle for three targets

Manchester United have taken the decision to keep Erik ten Hag as manager after the end of season review. The Dutch manager will now be handed cash in the transfer window to compete with Liverpool for more key signings.

New minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has spoken to several potential successors, including Thomas Frank, Kieran McKenna and Mauricio Pochettino, about potentially taking over for the 2024/25 season – but Ten Hag will now remain in the role following his success in the FA Cup.

According to the Daily Mail , the Red Devils boss will now receive around $64m (£50m/€59m) in his base-level transfer budget – but this could be increased by various sales of players. Various outlets have reported that every United player apart from Rasmus Højlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho is for sale as the club look to rejuvenate the squad that finished eighth last season.

United amassing a significant war chest for the summer transfer window would ring the bell at Liverpool, with both clubs already linked with several of the same players. Old Trafford and Anfield have both been touted as possible landing destinations for Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who impressed under Xabi Alonso during the Bundesliga title-winning campaign.

As well as the versatile Dutch international, Benfica’s 19-year-old prospect João Neves has also been linked with the clubs – although his $130m (£101m/€120m) release clause ) could prove to be a stumbling block for any interested party.

Elsewhere, Ligue 1 side Lille recently opened the door for 18-year-old defender Leny Yoro to leave as he approaches the final year of his contract at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. United and Liverpool will need defensive reinforcements in the coming months and could soon meet to secure the signing.
