AA and RAC customers can get £56 off the cover

Drivers can get RAC and AA breakdown cover for less than a third of the price. A recent study has revealed that motorists, drivers and road users up and down the country are paying three times more than they should for breakdown cover.

Drivers spend around £80 a year – worth up to £1.2 billion in total – on AA or RAC cover to ensure they can access help if their car breaks down when they’re out on the road road, reported This is Money. RAC cover for road damage averages £77 a year, depending on location and vehicle, according to researchers at consumer group Fairer Finance.

But the same cover is available from £21 if bought as an add-on to central premium car insurance – a saving of 72 per cent or £56. The most expensive extra for RAC cover found by Fairer Finance – £36 from Tesco Bank car insurance – would still represent a 53% saving.

AA standalone road breakdown cover averages £85 a year, according to Fairer Finance data, but drivers pay just £44.95 if they buy it as an add-on to Admiral car insurance. A spokesman for Fairer Finance said: “Essentially, when you buy as an add-on, you are buying an AA or RAC membership, as the cover offered is not very different to a standard membership, although a few levels of cover could be adapted.”

Fairer Finance managing director James Daley says: “People buying stand-alone cover have spent more time making a conscious decision to buy that cover and may have shopped around. some people may not realize they bought it or forget they did.”

An AA spokesperson said: “AAA breakdown cover is available through bundled bank accounts, however the level of cover varies depending on the bank account a customer holds. Purchasing coverage allows customers to pick and choose the level of coverage. , according to their needs.

“Purchasing cover directly through the AA gives customers extra benefits not always available through bundled bank accounts, such as 15% Greene King discount, up to 30% Vue discount, plus discount on MOT and vehicle servicing. If a Customer who currently has AA cover through their bank calls us to buy direct, or already has direct cover, then we will flag this to them and advise them to choose the cover that best suits their needs.”
