Residents fear pressure on Huddersfield village if new housing takes place

Residents in Shepley fear pressure on their village as plans have been submitted for a new housing development.

Plans to bring seven new homes to land off Marsh Lane have been submitted to Kirklees Council by developer Halstead Homes. The properties would have either three or four bedrooms and a total of 26 parking spaces would be built on site.

The site has been the subject of several planning applications over the years. The most recent planning permission was granted for three houses on the land in 2017, but this has now expired.

Residents have expressed concern over the latest proposals, fearing the impact on the surrounding area. One said “there are already too many houses being built in Shepley for the schools and doctors to cope with”.

Another said: “The development as proposed would be detrimental to the outlook and amenity of properties bordering Marsh Lane, particularly given the intensive nature of the proposal.”

They added: “The availability of public transport is mentioned as part of the sustainability of the proposal, although in reality this is unrealistic – the bus service is infrequent and ends just after 6pm and the train station is three quarters of a mile away down. (and up coming back).

“It’s inevitable that the occupants of any houses built will rely on their cars, which makes congestion worse.”
