Historic Sheffield home where couple died is up for sale for £900,000

A historian Sheffield the house where a couple tragically died in a fire has been put up for sale.

Leonard and Freda Ewing – both in their 90s – were killed when their home was engulfed in a fire in 2016 which caused severe damage to the Grade II listed Spout House, in Spout Lane, Stannington.

The fire started when the stove was left on overnight and ignited papers that were stacked in the kitchen.

The building dates back to the 1600s and is believed to be one of the oldest in Sheffield . It was previously restored by the couple when they moved decades ago.

The original house is believed to date from 1545, with later additions in 1678, and the adjoining cottage is believed to have been built before 1423.

The building, which has been empty since it was ravaged by fire, was listed at auction with a guide price of £900,000. It is described as an “outstanding development project”.

The building is located on a 1.3 acre lot, within walking distance of the top district. The listing also states that consent has been granted for the “repair and restoration” of the original house, including the addition of an annexe, luxury barn conversion and single-storey extension. The auction will take place online on July 17, 2024.
