Martin Lewis says a 5 minute phone call could add £74,000 to your state pension

Renowned money-saving expert Martin Lewis has suggested Britons could boost their state pension by £74,100 in their retirement years with just a simple phone call and a few cheques.

He advises you to make sure you are fully paid out of your National Insurance (NI) contributions to receive your full State Pension.

By paying £800 to HMRC, people can buy back a full year of missing NI payments, which in turn increases their annual pension by £330. Its cost can be recovered in less than three years.

In this scenario, a man who typically lives to age 85 would earn an additional £5,400, while a woman with a typical life expectancy of 87 would pocket £6,100.

However, these figures can multiply quickly if someone buys back several years of missing contributions from NI, as Martin Lewis has pointed out, the Express reports.
