Liverpool have received a major boost from the Premier League rule change introduced by FIFA

Liverpool have benefited more than any other Premier League club from the increase in extra time brought about by new FIFA regulations this season.

The campaign saw a significant increase in extra minutes played at the end of games, following a FIFA directive imposed during the World Cup at the end of 2022 to encourage more playing time.

While UEFA chose not to enforce the regulations in European competition, the Premier League was among those to embrace the new approach.

And the boffins at StatsChecker crunched the numbers to discover that Liverpool have been six points better this season thanks to late goals – more than any other Premier League club.

Next up were Arsenal and Chelsea, with a positive of four points. Champions Manchester City, however, were two points worse off in injury time, while Sheffield United dropped five points due to goals scored in extra time.

The Reds scored eight extra-time goals in the Premier League, with Darwin Nunez scoring winners at Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, while Harvey Elliott grabbed the winner at Crystal Palace. Luis Diaz scored a late equalizer at Luton Town, although curiously Liverpool’s only additional goal at Anfield was Mohamed Salah’s strike in the 2-0 win over Everton.
