Sheffield Wednesday agree Yan Valery charge, medical waiting

Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a fee to sign Angers defender Yan Valery, a report from The Star has said.

Sheffield Wednesday head into the first summer window under Danny Rohl and the German will be determined to make an impact on the ranks at Hillsborough.

He has worked brilliantly with the players he inherited to guide the Owls to an unlikely Championship survival, but new faces will now be sought as the German looks to steer the club up the division.

The transfer window officially opens on Friday and plenty of players have already been linked with moves. Now, however, it appears that a breakthrough has been made in the pursuit of defender Yan Valery.

The former Southampton man, now on the books in France with Angers, has been linked recently and The Star now claim Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a fee for his signature.

Personal terms are already in place so only a medical awaits before the signing is expected to be completed next week.

Montpellier and Standard Liege were also keen, but Wednesday seem to have won the race.

Rohl and Valery reunited

The report states that Rohl’s role in the proposed move to Sheffield Wednesday was instrumental in Valery’s decision, which will be music to the ears of the club’s supporters.

The German is a highly regarded coach and it seems the players are eager to play under him. This will hopefully give the Owls the edge in more transfer activity beyond this Valery swoop.

The two will be familiar with each other from their time together at Southampton, when the Tunisian defender was still young and Rohl was part of the team behind Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Valery, who can play as a full-back, full-back or right centre-back, has two goals and two assists in 53 games for the Saints.

Valery’s place in the team

Valery’s move is an interesting one, as the main positions he plays in is where Pol Valentin found great success towards the end of the season.

The Spaniard has grown as the campaign has progressed and has come to be a useful asset on the right.

Valery’s signing could see them battle it out for a place in the side, although both are likely to start for Sheffield Wednesday. As previously touched upon, the Tunisian international is capable of operating on the right side of a back three and could be ideal for that role.

That could push someone like Dominic Iorfa, who is out of contract at the end of this month, down the pecking order.
