Dog owners have warned that a potentially deadly viper has been spotted in the sunshine in Cornwall

A warning has been issued for dog owners as a viper was spotted ‘basking in the sun’ in Cornwall. The bite of these common snakes can be fatal to a dog.

The UK’s only venomous snake, they are more likely to strike in the summer when they come out of hibernation at this time of year, preferring warmer climates. If approached, they will act in self-defense and can cause serious injury or even death to animals.

It comes as a Cornwall vet spotted one basking in the sun just a few days ago at Kit Hill, near Callington. Publishing a warning, Calweton Veterinary Group said: “If your dog is bitten, please call us straight away.” It also advises you on what to do if you ever find yourself in this situation.

The vet group said: “Discovered at Kit Hill by one of our vets! Vipers are now coming out of hibernation and enjoying relaxing in the sun. Please be careful with your dogs, vipers will act in self defense if disturbed and can deliver nasty bites.

“If your dog is bitten, please call us immediately. If possible, you should transport your dog; this will help prevent the venom from circulating further around its body. You can bathe the wound in cold water.
