All eyes on Birmingham ahead of the European Junior Cup

The Birmingham European Junior Cup heads to the home of British Judo this weekend for the second time.

96 Britons will be joined by judokas from 17 other nations as more than 270 athletes battle it out to be crowned European Junior Cup champions in Birmingham in 2024.

We take a look at some of the top British judokas to watch this weekend.

-60 kg

Charlie Ayre leads British entries, seeded 6thafter Kaunas European Junior Cup bronze last month

-66 kg

2023 -60 kg silver medalist, Lewis Fryer he moved up to the -66 kg category this year and enters the 5th placethseed.

-73 kg

bronze medalist at the 2023 European Junior Championship, Luke Davies leads the entry list as the number one seed after a silver medal at the European Junior Cup in Kaunas before Ben Levy which enters as 4th seeded following a bronze medal in the same event alongside Irakli Goginashvili which enters as 7th seed.

After silver and gold medals at the African Junior and Cadet Cup in Marrakech last month, Oriol Rubio-Ruiz is sown 5th.

-81 kg

Eryk Neumann is sown 5th after winning a bronze medal at the European Junior Cup in Kaunas.

-90 kg

Luke Austen finished 7th at the European Junior Cup in Birmingham in 2023, while Cameron Hickey placed 7th at the European Junior Cup in Kaunas last month.

+100 kg

Daniel Ede took bronze at last years European Junior Cup in Birmingham and recorded 5th finishing place at Kaunas Junior European Cup and Marrakech African Open this year. He enters as 2when seed before James Weller-Henry who placed 5th at the European Junior Cup in Birmingham in 2023

-48 kg

Summer Shaw leads the records by -48 kg after silver and bronze medals at the European Junior Cups in Kaunas and Podgorica respectively. Shaw is joined by 8th seed Rachael Gray who finished 7th at the European Junior Cup in Birmingham in 2023.

-52 kg

Lucy Robinson is sown 3st, but the one to watch will be Tara Babulfath from Sweden. Babulfath took bronze at the World Senior Championships in Abu Dhabi earlier this year and qualified as the youngest judoka to compete at the Paris Olympics in the -48kg category.

-57 kg

Maddy Birri leads the records with -57 kg. The Ealing Judo Club fighter finished 5thth at the European Junior Cup in Birmingham in 2024, before securing her first European Tour medal the following month. This year he won bronze at the European Junior Cup in Pozan, ahead of a 5th final place at the European Junior Cup in Kaunas last month.

Champion 2023 -52 kg Charlotte Jenman has moved up to the -57kg category in 2024 and is in great form after a silver medal at the Kaunas European Junior Cup last time out.

Completing the GB Judo seeded fighters is Chloe Link. Link took bronze at the European Junior Cup in Kaunas.

-63 kg

Millie Bayliss heads to Birmingham in fine form after taking gold at the Africa Junior Cup in Marrakech. She took the gold before Phoebe Digweed which enters as 4th seed.

Katie Mills enter as 7th seeded and will be looking for her first European Junior Cup medal after finishing 5thth at the Kaunas European Junior Cup recently.

-70 kg

Holly Devall enter as the number one seed ahead Nicole Wood who is sown 3st. Devall is coming into good form after taking gold at the European Junior Cup in Kaunas last month.

-78 kg

Anya Hassan is seeded 2when in the -78 kg category. Hassan finished 5thth 12 months ago but recently completed 2when at the European Junior Cup in Kaunas.

Gracie Wilson joins Hassan and enters as 6th seed after 5th final place at the European Junior Cups in Kaunas and Sarajevo.

+78 kg

Harriet McRae leads the GB records in the +78kg category after a 7th final place at the European Junior Cup in Malaga last month.
