The revised plan sets out where and when the A66 will be closed for two months

Revised plans to close a major A road in North Yorkshire for two months have been unveiled by National Highways as work moves closer to starting.

The Roads Agency has confirmed that the main A66 between Scotch Corner and Hartforth will be partially closed from July 1 for two months.

According to Motorways, the stretch of road will be closed – but it will be in stages to allow motorists not to be fully affected by the roadworks.

North Yorkshire Council’s roadworks map lists the closure as between July 1 and September 9 – and lists the sections that will be closed.

The job description says: “Roads from Winston Cross to Hartwoth Junction, Hartforth Junction to end of dual carriageway, Scotch Corner to Sedbury Layby exit, Sedbury Layby – Sedbury Home Farm, Sedbury Home Farm to Melsonby Cross Roads, Melsonby to Winston Cross Roads, Scotch Corner Roundabout, Scotch Corner Roundabout, Leeming to Barton, A66 Laybys.”

In the works description section, Highways says: “A66 eastbound and westbound Hartforth Junction to Scotch Corner road closures, lane closures for resurfacing scheme.”

Other measures include:

  • From Monday 1 July we are resurfacing the A66 westbound between Scotch Corner and Hartforth. This work will take place over approximately two months in total.

  • To achieve this safely, the westbound A66 will be closed on weeknights between 8pm and 6am. This work will be carried out in stages.

  • During the day, a temporary speed limit of 50 mph will remain in place.

  • Westbound traffic will be diverted up to Junction 58 of the A1(M) to use the A68 and A688, with additional diversions signed for HGVs to avoid the weight restriction from Barnard Castle at Abbey Bridge.

  • Signed diversions will be in place to maintain resident access.

A National Highways spokesman said: “At this stage traffic management plans are still being finalised. We will share any further changes and updates via the National Highways: Yorkshire and North East webpage, our X (Twitter) feed @HighwaysNEAST and the National Highways: North East Facebook page.”
