Leicester City could hand Leeds United a major promotion boost with their key verdict of the transfer window

The Premier League’s relegated class will be the major threat to Leeds United’s promotion chances next season, but they will also be helped if the best of the rest are weakened before August. West Bromwich Albion are the highest-placed of the teams to return from last year’s promotion race, behind Leeds, and with Carlos Corberan at the helm, they would expect to be there or thereabouts.

Will the former Whites boss still be at The Hawthorns? Leicester City are reportedly circling the West Midlands as they weigh up their preferences for the vacant head coaching job. Enzo Maresca has agreed to join Chelsea, leaving the Championship winners without a front man.

Graham Potter, who is out of work, is another the Foxes are courting, but he has proved quite picky in his managerial choices since getting the boot at Stamford Bridge. Corberan would need a sizeable compensation after signing a new contract of his own last year, but he will certainly relish the chance to finally make it in the top flight.

The 41-year-old’s impact at both Huddersfield Town and West Brom has been significant in the second tier. The Terriers over-performed to reach the Championship play-off final in 2022 after finishing the regular season in third place below the Spaniard.

Corberan faced the Baggies in October 2022 when they were second from bottom after 16 games. He would take them as high as ninth by the end of the campaign and then in the final quarter he oversaw a fifth place finish, behind arguably the strongest top four the Championship has ever seen.

Should that key cog be taken away from a West Brom side that doesn’t impress on paper, Leeds could see one of last season’s strongest sides significantly weakened by 2024/25.
