Storms are set to hit Coventry this weekend amid highs of 24C

Storms will hit Coventry and Warwickshire this weekend amid wet conditions and highs of 24C. Met Office forecasters have issued a 10-hour weather warning for Sunday (May 12).

A yellow warning is in place for Coventry, Warwickshire and the West Midlands for heavy showers and thunderstorms which “could lead to some disruption in places”. It will remain in place from 12pm to 10pm on Sunday (May 12).

Forecasters said the warning covers the whole of the West Midlands, including Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Birmingham, and extends into Scotland and Wales. Up to 30mm of rain is expected to fall in less than an hour, the Met Office says.

Homes could be flooded quickly and buildings could be damaged by flooding, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds, the Met Office says. It could also affect those traveling in the region, as well as presenting a risk of flooding, with a “slight chance” of power cuts, the Daily Mirror reports.

Train and bus services may also be canceled in parts of the West Midlands. It’s likely to be “hot and humid” this weekend with an “increasing risk of storms” and then, looking into next week, it’s likely to turn cooler as the region returns to longer spells of rain, the Daily reports Mirror.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office Tony Wisson said: “Many places will get off to a fine and warm start on Sunday (May 12), although it is possible to become cloudier during the day and this will be accompanied by scattered showers which could be heavy with thunder.
