Students from Cornwall and the area celebrated at the annual YourTV Awards

Two dozen children and young people from across the region gathered with their families, dignitaries and production crew members for a special night in Cornwall on Wednesday.

It was the annual video recording of the annual YourTV Youth Achievement Awards, supported by the Optimist Club of Cornwall, held in the halls of the civic complex and attracting around 150 people to a dinner which kicked off the event before the cameras rolled.

“We couldn’t do this without (the Optimist Club, members) fundraising throughout the year to get the awards,” YourTV producer Gabriel Rivière-Reid told the gathering just before the show began.

“We’ve had great buy-in from school boards, from teachers taking the time to gather nominations. . . then we have a four-person committee that has some very difficult decisions to make.”

Terry Muir from the Optimist Club said the partnership with YourTV to put on the event has been in place for almost a decade and while club members work hard all year to support many causes, they have a special place for what is a celebration of children who do so much. great things in their schools and communities.

“I think (Optimist Club members) would all agree that this is our favorite event,” Muir said.

There is something about television that is energizing – and the show is always well produced – but television is only part of what makes the evening special. All 24 children and young people who were named category winners or finalists walked off the stage with great prizes including laptops or tablets, scrolls and other items, and before leaving the stage they got to sign the official Book of Recognition of Cornwall.

Acting Mayor of Cornwall for June, Councillor. Denis Sabourin attended the event and there were video messages of support from Stormont—Dundas—South Glengarry MP Eric Duncan, SDSG MP Nolan Quinn and others.

Several speakers talked about the difficult choices the judges had to make, and while the number of recipients remained at 24, there was an increase in nominations for 2024, thanks in part to community efforts by Muir and others to generate more publicity before the event. spring.

Even in an average year, Muir said, about 100 nominations are made, with students in grades 4-12 eligible, and winners ultimately celebrated in the following categories: Kindness is Cool, At My Best and Giving Back.
