Two successes at Arsenal, Ineos wants Manchester United to copy them

Not so long ago, Manchester United and Arsenal were almost aligned as the ‘Banter Brothers’ of the Premier League.

One messes up, the other follows suit and vice versa. Big-money signings failing on an almost annual basis, highly-rated managers doing their proverbial nuts trying to shake a sleeping giant out of their slumber, and success always proving elusive.

So how did Arsenal get so far away from Manchester United? How did Arsenal get themselves in order while the other half of this ‘Chuckling Brother’ pair continue to slip over banana skins and crash headfirst into the nearest custard pie?

Arsenal’s transformation from perennial underachievers to bona fide Premier League rivals owes much to the excellent work done behind the scenes, not only by Mikel Arteta, but also by a well-run recruitment department led by Edu Gaspar.

Arsenal, as much as it pains us to say it, are probably the example Man United must follow if the Premier League’s fiercest rivalry is to hit the big time again.

Manchester United bosses take note of Arsenal’s success

According to The Independent, Man United’s new decision-makers Ineos took a close look at Arsenal’s progress under Arteta and Edu when they carried out a detailed end-of-season review. Gunners The dreadful 2020/21 campaign was one in which Ineos took a particular interest.

Arsenal finished eighth that season – the same place Man United had finished last term – with Arteta spending most of that year facing questions over his suitability for the top job at the Emirates Stadium.

The Independent noted the patience and support Arsenal have given Arteta and will now be hoping Erik ten Hag can thrive in similar circumstances at Old Trafford after confirming the Dutchman will stay.

The report adds that Ineos noted how Arteta transformed Arsenal from a squad of overpaid, underperforming veteran players to a young, hungry and ever-improving roster. Between 2020 and 2021, Arsenal took Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Luiz, Soktratis Papastathopoulos, Shkodran Mustafi, Willian, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil off the wage bill.

In their place came, among others, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes and Martin Odegaard.

The revolution begins at Old Trafford

Man United, who announced the departures of Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial earlier this month, look set to embark on a similar rejuvenation of their playing squad. Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are also likely to leave, with new manager Jason Wilcox now leading a recruitment team that – like Edu’s at Arsenal – will put extra emphasis on future superstars rather than superstars which fades away.

United’s top targets include Jarrad Branthwaite (21), Michael Olise (22), Joao Neves (19) and Joshua Zirkzee (23), with Ineos boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe explaining what supporters can expect from a club desperate to learn from mistakes. from the Glazer era.

“I would prefer to sign Next (Kylian) Mbappe rather than spend a fortune buying success,” Ratcliffe told the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast, with United splashing Alexis Sanchez and Cristiano Ronaldo in their wake.

“It is not so smart to buy Mbappe. Anyone could figure that out. It’s more difficult to find the next Mbappe or the next Jude Bellingham or the next Roy Keane.”
