Pub near Coventry serving ‘adventurous food’ named among UK’s best alfresco dining

A country pub near Coventry has been praised for being a ‘lovely place to have a perfect meal’ with ‘delicious and well presented food’. The Rose Inn, in Atherstone, Warwickshire, has been listed as one of the Top 100 restaurants for outdoor dining by OpenTable.

The Rose Inn, located 30 minutes from Coventry, is in the North Warwickshire countryside in the village of Baxterley, with stunning views over Leicestershire and Birmingham. It is opposite the old Baddesley colliery, behind the village green and duck pond, with an orchard and large sitting area overlooking the pond.

The building dates from the 18th century and was originally considered to be a “gentlemen’s residence”. It has served as a courthouse, morgue, prison and public house for over a hundred years.

The Rose Inn is a dog-friendly pub that focuses on “great ales” and “quality, freshly prepared food”. All the food is freshly prepared with “nothing bought” and all prepared on site using the best local and international ingredients, bosses say.

The quarry-tiled bar has an open coal fire, welcoming drinkers and walkers alike, plus the pub has cozy connecting rooms for intimate family meals and parties, as well as a large restaurant and function rooms accommodating up to 60 people for events such as weddings and baby showers.

In terms of food, The Rose Inn has a standard a la carte menu, but also offers a lunch and light snacks menu, a Saturday Breakfast Club menu, a Sunday lunch, a children’s menu and desserts.

• Roast chicken breast – Potato terrine with truffles, asparagus, peas and tarragon fricassee. £16.50.

• Laksa from Malaysia – with sweet potatoes and coconut rice. £14.00.

• The rose burger – beef patty, smoked bacon, burger sauce and cheese. £15.00.

• Steak and beer pie – hand cut chips, seasonal vegetables and gravy. £16.00.

• Linguine with hot peppers and garlic -cherry tomatoes, fresh arugula and parmesan. £12.00.

• Roast Pork Ciabatta – with cheese and red onion jam. £12.00.

• Sausage and mash – three butcher’s sausages, cream potatoes and onion gravy – £15.00.

The country pub has a 4-star rating on Tripadvisor with a Traveler’s Choice badge for 2023. It also has a 4.4-star rating on Google Reviews and a 4.6 out of 5 on OpenTable.

One diner who visited this month said: “I have been to Rose for lunch on a few occasions and the standard of food and service is consistently high. Yesterday was no exception. The steak and beer pie was one of the best I’ve had.”

Another said: “From the outside the rose looks odd and I was expecting a pretty average village pub, albeit with a duck pond outside! dish there was a more adventurous equivalent.

“For example, there were standard pub meals like fish and chips, but if you wanted a change there was sea bass with pesto potatoes. All our meals were excellent, friendly service and proper attention, thanks to Jack and Neve.”
