Tragic reason why the Library of Birmingham will turn green tonight

The Library of Birmingham will be lit up green tonight to mark the seventh anniversary of a national tragedy. The Grenfell fire disaster left 72 dead and loved ones of those who died continue to campaign for safer homes in their memory.

And as part of ‘Green4GrenfellDay’, the iconic library will turn green in solidarity. A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council shared on X: “The @LibraryofBham will be lit up green tonight for #Green4GrenfellDay, marking the 7th anniversary of the tragedy.”

In 2023, a 150 million High Court settlement was reached with almost 900 people whose lives were “destroyed or changed” by the Grenfell tragedy, ITV reports. It was reported that as this case was a civil claim, it “will have no impact on the public inquiry report into the fire or any future criminal charges”.

The Grenfell Inquiry was set up under the Inquiries Act 2005, which was introduced by the first phase of Tony Blair’s Labor government, focused on the factual account of the events of that night and was published in October 2019. It concluded that the cladding of the tower did not it complied with building regulations and was the “primary” reason for the fire’s rapid and “deeply shocking” spread.

In November 2023, the inquiry cited rule 13 as part of the delay. They explained: “Under rule 13 of the Inquiry Rules, the inquiry is required to write to those who may be subject to criticism, explaining the basis on which such criticism may be made.” The Grenfell Inquiry has said its final report will be published on September 4 later this year.

A spokesperson for the Green4Grenfell campaign added: “Green 4 Grenfell Day was first held in 2017 to commemorate those who have helped our community. Our campaign made schools across the country wear green and raise awareness for local causes.”
