Manchester United commit £50m to modernize training centre

From Monday, Carrington Football Club’s training ground will undergo a large-scale refurbishment aimed at upgrading the existing sports, medical and recovery areas, as well as creating more space suitable for collaboration.

Foster + Partners is the designer for the £50m Manchester United project. Its mission is to transform the old Carrington Training Complex into a “world-class soccer facility,” according to a press release. The architecture firm is no stranger to sports facilities, having designed Qatar’s Lusail Stadium as well as the revamped Wembley Stadium.

“Our aim is to modernize and revitalize the building as a catalyst for future football success, creating spaces that inspire a culture of collaboration, unity and belonging,” said Lord Norman Foster, founder of Foster + Partners.

Foster continued: “As a proud Mancunian, it is a great honor for me to see Foster + Partners take on this responsibility and we will ensure that our design captures the spirit of industry, grit and ambition that exemplifies both Manchester and Manchester United.”

The renovation work is expected to take place throughout the club’s 2024/25 season.

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: “We want to create a world-class environment for our teams to win.

“When we carried out a thorough review of the Carrington training facilities and met with our men’s first team players, it was clear that standards had fallen below some of our peers,” he continued.

“This project will ensure that Manchester United’s training ground is once again refurbished to the highest standards.

“Lord Foster, a fellow Mancunian, has brought great inspiration to the design, along with the Manchester United squad, and we look forward to seeing the facilities improve, but most importantly on the pitch.”
