Sixth person arrested in ongoing investigation into baby remains found in Wigan garden

A 71-year-old man was arrested today on suspicion of obstructing a lawful burial in connection with an ongoing investigation.

This investigation began in April when we discovered the human remains of a child in a property in Marsh Green, Wigan.

This brings the total number of arrests to six, with this last man still in custody for questioning. The other five remain on bail as our inquiries continue.

Detective Chief Inspector John Davies, who is leading the investigation, said: “This latest arrest comes on the back of extensive detective work which has been ongoing since April 10.

“Our investigation is incredibly complex, with multiple detectives and specialists dedicated solely to establishing the full circumstances of what happened.

“A Home Office post-mortem has now taken place on the remains, however further tests with various specialists are still required and are now underway. We remain open to our questions and make progress.

“As we have previously assured, this is being treated as an isolated incident and no other remains of other individuals have been found in connection with this investigation.”
