Mother urges alleged ‘hitwoman’ daughter to turn herself in after Birmingham shooting

The dispute turned violent, with windows smashed and the shop’s interior “trashed”, and Nazir and Aslam left injured.

Jurors were told that in revenge the pair flew Betro from the United States to kill Mr Ali and his family.

The court heard that Betro stayed at a number of hotels in Birmingham, Derby, Brighton and London, at one point staying at a Radisson Blu hotel.

On the morning of September 7, she allegedly tried to shoot Mr Ali outside a house in Acocks Green, Birmingham, but her gun jammed, the court heard. She later returned to the house in a taxi and fired three shots at her before ordering the driver to take her to a McDonald’s in Bordesley Green. No one was hit.

Jurors were told that Betro fled back to the US two days later on September 9.

Ms Johnson, a former dispatcher for a trucking company, said she only learned of her estranged daughter’s alleged role in the failed assassination attempt when she was approached by reporters this week.

Speaking on the front porch of her home in Stevens Point, Wis., she acknowledged that, in hindsight, there were clear signs that Betro’s life was falling apart.

In September 2019, Betro suddenly left his home in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee, where he lived with a roommate.

“He just got up and left”

Mrs Johnson told The Times: ‘Five years ago he up and left and left all his things where they were. I think there’s a lot in the picture that I don’t know, but the picture is starting to come together now.”

Betro is believed to have attended local schools before graduating from Milwaukee Area Technical College with a degree in graphic design, according to a LinkedIn profile.

She went on to work as a telephone sales representative for the Milwaukee Brewers for several years. According to LinkedIn, she has since worked as a graphic designer and dog sitter.

Ms. Johnson said that sometime after she left the Milwaukee Brewers and moved to Chicago, things started to go wrong for her daughter.

“She was caught by the wrong people,” she said. “Aimee just stopped talking to me and everyone in her family. I don’t know what got into it. But there’s nothing I can do now.”

The last time Mrs Johnson heard from her daughter was when she received a happy Mother’s Day message on May 12.

“Every time I got a text from her, I was like, ‘Oh my God,'” Ms. Johnson said.

Police and the Crown Prosecution Service have refused to release photographs of Betro.

Visiting clubs and raves

Images posted on social media by Betro, but not presented in court, appear to show she spent the days leading up to the failed gun attack visiting clubs and raves across the UK.

The footage, posted on Instagram but has since been removed, appears to show her dancing at a boat party, visiting the London Eye and attending the Tranzmission music festival at Crystal Palace.

A message from the seat of a flight from New York was also posted, with “To Manchester we go (smiley face emoji). I can’t wait to see my partner in crime LOL.”

At the end of the five-minute film – after footage of her train arriving in Birmingham – there is a shot of Betro believed to be wearing devil horns.

A West Midlands Police spokesman told The Telegraph: “Efforts to trace a woman who we believe was involved in the conspiracy are ongoing.”
