Stourbridge golfers say politicians’ performance is below par

General election candidates are underperforming when it comes to trust, according to Stourbridge Golf Club members. The talk in the bar at the Worcester Lane course is whether any of the major parties can be believed.

Policies like taxes and immigration take second place to the fundamental issue of honesty, which some players see as insufficient. Paul Rock, 71, said: “They are not as honest, there are so many politicians recently who have proven to be unreliable, like Boris – he has led the way.”

For Mr Rock, it is not a political party, he believes politicians on both sides are not giving straight answers and the current Labor leader drew his attention in a Sky TV debate. Mr Rock added: “We were watching a programme, they were trying to get Starmer on the phone and he wouldn’t answer, he kept saying ‘we might not raise the fees’.

“It’s not good enough, said the interviewer ‘so that means it might’, everyone knows if they say they don’t intend to, they might.” Ron McMaster, 78, who is undecided whether to vote Labor or Tory, is not convinced he is getting the full story from both sides.

He said: “They’re not telling the truth about how they’re going to raise the money, they’re proposing all these things they’re going to spend money on and not raise taxes – that’s rubbish. “They’re going to have to raise taxes to pay for all of this, why aren’t they telling us the truth?”

Golfers agreed they would be happier to hear bad news than be left in the dark, saying they would be happy to hear about the tax increase if it led to better public services. Trevor Woodhouse, 78, said: “If they stood up and said you’re going to have this huge bill because that’s definitely what’s going to happen.”
